Forest Bathing

A term that means visiting a forest for relaxation. Or a walk through the woods to aid in a person’s well being and serenity. And what better time of year for this idea of forest bathing, than fall.

The forests here in Vermont are finally undergoing their autumn changes. Warmer weather in September slowed the process. And some worried that the colors might be muted or the leaves would fall off too quickly once the cooler weather arrived.

But as I stroll through the forests near where I live, as I bathe in their colorful splendor, I know that nature is right on schedule.

Autumn is here. And the forest is displaying her extravagance, splashing the earth with her glorious hues.

It is truly the perfect time for forest bathing.

The Taste of Summer

It seems to take forever to get here. Summer here in Vermont is notoriously late. A chilly and wet June dashed hopes of it arriving on time. But when it does finally arrive…it is a time of delicious celebration. A feast for the senses.

image

And so we immerse ourselves in the glorious scents and sounds and…tastes of summer.

Scrumptious rich sunsets

Delectable warm waters

Juicy succulent flowers

Heavenly blue skies

Sweet luscious fields

Enticing aromatic forests

Mouthwatering ripe gardens

There is a certain flavor to summer. It is a time that awakens and arouses all of our senses.

image

It is a time to savor and enjoy and taste…every last morsel.

From Lake Willoughby With Love

There is a place. In the far northeast corner of Vermont. A place I have come to love. A place where I have over the years sought peace and serenity and found so much more. It holds a very special place in my heart.

image

Lake Willoughby.

With her towering mountains that stand guard over her shores.

With her calm and reflective waters.

With iher glorious vistas and magnificent sunsets.

It is a place where worries fall away and life slows down. A step back into a simpler time. And wonder around every corner and on every mountain top.

It’s always hard to leave. But I know that she’s always here for me. Waiting patiently until I return again.

Springtime at the Quarries

They always surprise me, these abandoned quarries.

image

I always discover something new each time I go. A new trail. Another new hidden quarry. A new view. A new sense of awe.

In the springtime, the quarries show their true colors. The deep and mineral rich water sparkles brilliantly in the sun.

The leaves fill in the woods and trails filtering light and giving life to the things that grow here.

The rocks, scarred and striated, stand tall and proud above the glorious pools below.

image

This newness…is how I wish to live my life. Each day a new beginning. Each day a new chance. Each day a new adventure.

image

And the quarries in springtime remind me just how beautifully brand new each day is.

Kissing the Earth

The world around me is growing, blooming, flourishing. I am in awe of her beauty and her unfolding.

image

I love all seasons but spring…the season of rebirth…holds me in her spell. Enchanting, captivating, and radiant.

I immerse myself in her lushness and extravagance.

I stare in wonder at the abundance of colors and inhale the heavenly scents.

I feel gentle breezes and nourishing rains. The earth is truly coming back to life.

image

There is a stirring inside my soul. A desire, a passion, a reverence for what I am seeing and experiencing around me and within me. I feel myself blossoming and expanding. My heart joyous and content.

It’s as though I am kissing the earth. Savoring these tender and sweet moments. And as I journey through this season…

image

I feel the earth kissing me back.

Gifts from the Sea

I spent two days by the sea. On the southern coast of Maine. A place full of familiar sights and so much that is unchartered territory. A place to lose and find myself. A place filled with gifts. Gifts from the sea.image

It is a place I love.

A few times a year I make my way there. Because the gifts it offers, are the ones I am longing for. Gifts that replenish and exhilarate me.

The soothing and tranquil waters of the Casco Bay.

The ancient and weathered rocks that create the shoreline.

The crashing waves of the open ocean that ebb and flow.

The fragile and beautiful shells that are left behind to be found.

Time with the sea is my gift to myself.

image

A gift that I never tire of receiving.

image

And the sea never tires of giving…

My Secret Garden

Someone recently told me that I have a secret garden inside of me. And when I heard this…I knew it to be true.

It is deep in my heart. Deep inside where my spirit lives. Deep inside where it has laid dormant for a very long time.

image

I think I had forgotten it was there. Buried under the overgrown weeds and tangled branches. The debris and wreckage that comes from loss and heartache. Piled so thick so that no sunlight could reach it.

image

Slowly though, I have pulled away the piles and the layers to uncover what has been asleep and buried. The garden of my heart.

And in this uncovering, a wondrous and amazing thing has happened. The garden has come back to life. In fact it’s bursting with buds and blooms. It’s big and bright and vibrant. It’s rich and earthy and warm. It’s full of hope and joy…

And most of all…love

image

As a child, I was enchanted by the story ” The Secret Garden”. Today, as a grown woman, I am discovering my very own secret garden. And I don’t want to keep it a secret. I want to share it with the world.

Because in the words of Francis Hodgson Burnett, author of “The Secret Garden”

It blooms and blooms and every morning new miracles are revealed.

image

So I am sharing this garden I’ve found with others. Please come visit it anytime:

What better time than spring, the season of rebirth, to discover your own secret garden.

Eternal Spring

As I write this, it is 20 degrees below zero.  Spring, according to the calendar, is just a few weeks away.  Somehow I think it might take a bit longer to arrive here in the north country.

image

It has been a brutally cold winter.  Yet I know it won’t last forever.  I also know that inside of me there is hope.  Spring will come and we will welcome her with open arms.

image

I like to think that spring is eternal.

image

It is within us all.  At any time of the year.

image

At any point in our lives.

image

Spring can be felt and experienced and shared.

Spring is rebirth, growth, unfolding, opening.

It is hope, faith, optimism, joy.

Spring is alive, vibrant, colorful, rich.

It is earthy, sultry, sweet, delicate.

Spring is so much more than just a season.

image

It is how life can be lived…eternally

I am a Lover

I am a lover.

I read the most beautiful and inspiring essay on Rebelle Society the other day. And I thought, what a perfect title for a post, because I am a lover too.

image

I love the sky and the stars and the moon

I love the flowers and the trees and the grasses

I love the creatures big and small

I love the mountains and the fields and the ocean

I love the seasons and the clouds and the sun

I love the colors of the earth

I love to see, hear, smell, taste and touch

I love the hearts of my family and friends

image
I love my feelings and my ideas and my dreams

I love the rich tapestry of experiences that have lead me to this moment.

image
I love this life I live.

image
I am love…

image
I am a lover.
